Antique Edwardian 'Mizpah' heart brooch set in sterling silver. This beautiful brooch is highly decorated with leaves, ball and bow detailing. On the front of the brooch is says 'Mizpah' and 'The Lord watch between me & three', 'When we are absent one from another'. The hallmarks indicate the piece was made in 1911, it is set in sterling silver. The piece was hallmarked in Birmingham, England.
Mizpah jewellery was incredibly popular, the word is a biblical source: Genesis, chapter 31, verse 49, where is reads 'And Mizpah, for he said the Lord watch between me and three when we are absent from one another'. Mizpah literally meant a watchtowers.
